Beautiful mahogany display case with beveled glass insert.
The display case was originally the property of
Chicago
book collector David Gage Joyce and was sold along with his book collection at
Hanzel Galleries,
September 23-24, 1973
. Although Joyce died in 1937, his
library was not sold until 1973. This
case, along with several similar cases, were built specifically for Joyce and
his book collection, circa 1910. All
of the other cases were purchased by Marshall Field and Co. for use in their
silver department in their store on
Michigan Ave.
Joyce, who made his fortune in
timber, commissioned the construction of these display cases for his personal
library.
The case is carved with knights on the four legs, a decorative device at the
corners and has heavy, beveled glass inserts at the front, both sides and a
massive beveled glass insert on top. The
top has three hinges at back and can be removed for transport.
The dimensions are 84” at the widest at back, 50.5” wide at front. The sides
are 11” at 90 degrees off the back and then slant another 34” to the front.
The height at front is 29” and
35” at back. That provides an
interior display height of 10” at back sloping to 6” at front.
The interior display space is ample for large volumes.
A truly outstanding piece of American cabinetry.
Arrangement, payment and liability for transport is the
responsibility of the buyer.
