Campaigning with King. Charles King, Chronicler of the Old Army.
Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, (1991),
First Edition. octavo, maroon cloth in pictorial dust jacket. (xxx), (194)pp. University of Nebraska Press, Item #25687
Edited and with an introduction by Paul L. Hedren. Illustrated with photographs. Charles King was one of the more improbable characters in American history: he completed 70 years of active military service and was the only soldier decorated for fighting in five wars. Known as the "American Kipling," he wrote numerous 19th-century dramatic novels between his campaigns. His books--best sellers then and forgotten today--provided matchless first-person insight into the frontier wars and Indian life. This chatty study by his long-term biographer and friend was only recently rediscovered and edited. Solidly factual, it brings to life a host of well- known historical characters befriended by King. Very fine copy.
