Henry Stevens of Vermont was one of the greatest booksellers of the nineteenth century. James Lenox and John Carter Brown were among his clients. He sold modern English books to the Smithsonian Institute and new American publications to the British Museum. He became a great expert in early English material, the greatest expert in early Americana, and an arms agent for Gen. John C. Fremont at the outbreak of the Civil War.
