A history of approximately 300 typefaces which are shown in upper and lower cases with numerals and punctuation. The history, aims, and purpose behind many of these typefaces are also described, along with production problems encountered and individual characteristics. This Preliminary Edition was sent out by Mac McGrew to those who contributed to the project and asking for additional input. Laid into this copy is a T.l.s. from Mac McGrew to typographer John Schappler thanking him for his contributions and requesting additional additions or corrections, "so that the following trade edition may be as complete and authoritative as possible.." Also laid in are two lined sheets listing various specimens. Spine creased.
