The text reproduces in actual size the more than 2000 relief-cut ornaments and illustrations used by American printers from 1640 to 1776. Each ornament and illustration is accompanied by a listing of the names and locations of the printers who used it. Bibliographical references drawn primarily from Charles Evans's American Bibliography and Roger P. Bristol' s Supplement to Charles Evans' American Bibliography note the imprint containing the first appearance of each ornament or illustration in each year of its use. A most important reference tool. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed on the half-title, "For John Hench, With all my best wishes and many thanks for your help. Elizabeth Reilly January 29, 1976." Laid in is a notecard in envelope to Lea and John Hench, "We're still glowing from Wednesday night - thank you for making it such a special day for me....And Joh, I wish I could thank you enough for your editing - and patience and friendship in putting together the dictionary....With love, Liz." Top edges of text block heavily foxed, jacket dust soiled.
