Scudder was editor of the "Atlantic Monthly" founded by Holmes and James Russell Lowell in 1856 and shortly after Holme's death edited Holme's complete poetical works. From the June 21, 1890 letter, "My dear Mr. Scudder, ...I do not have your distrust of yourself and have no doubt that the 'Atlantic' will go on as happily as ever. I hope to do my small share...I can probably have something for you by December...Wishing you all success, I am yours very truly, O W Holmes." In the Sept 25, 1890, Holmes is less effusive and says his ill health will keep him from making a contribution to the "Atlantic Monthly". He finishes the letter in a very shaky hand.
