Before the United States entered World War I, Hall enlisted in the French army and became a member of the Lafayette Escadrille. He was commissioned a captain in the U.S. Air Service in February 1918. On May 7, 1918 a few days after Hall completed this book, he was shot down and captured during a battle over the German lines. One of the many stories in this book is Hall's battle with seven German airplanes. He was shot through the lungs and fell for over two miles with his motor going full speed. He recovered consciousness just long enough to straighten his plane 300 feet from the ground and glide to safety into a front-line trench. This story does not contain information on his final flight or his prisoner of war experiences. Introduction by Maj. Edmund Gros, Air Service, A.E.F. Illustrated with photographs.
